FIRE NE Iowa Advocacy

Special Education for Students in Accredited Non-Public Schools
Presented by Edie Bogaczyk with Bodaczyk Law Firm, Hosted by the FIRE Foundation of Northeast Iowa

Navigating Special Education can be overwhelming at times, and we hope that this presentation will help you navigate the Child Find process, parental rights and special education law concerning accredited non-public schools.

FIRE Foundation of Northeast Iowa recognizes there is a true need to provide education to parents, administrators, teachers, and service providers on this topic.  We encourage all parents, administrators, teachers and service providers view this presentation in order to become a stronger advocate for students who need access to supports and services that attend Accredited Non-Public Schools.

IDEA National Report

BAD IDEA: How States Block Federal Special Education Funding to Private and Religious School Students

This report finds that two states and three school districts around the country for which data are available appear to be out of compliance with provisions of the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that require provision of equitable, publicly funded special education services to students in private schools, after a $3.8 million settlement was reached in Massachusetts for failure to comply.

Stay tuned over the next few months we will be sharing real stories of Iowans.

Here is a sneak peak of our stories:

* You will hear from parents who have children with disabilities/learning challenges that are attending accredited non public schools.  Parents will share their success stories and the barriers that they needed to be overcome.
